Oil declines on economy worries

Crude oil's price has fallen nearly 7% amid continued weak global demand, and high stock levels in the US.
US light crude was $2.58 lower at $34.93 a barrel in Tuesday trading in New York, while in London Brent crude had lost $2.25 to $41.03 per barrel.
Analysts said the fact Opec had still not fully implemented last year's output cut was another factor. The economic outlook will continue to dominate the first half of 2009.
The United States, eurozone and Japan are in synchronized recession.
Opec is expected to announce further cuts in output after it next meets on 15 March.
Oil prices hit record highs above $147 a barrel last summer, but have fallen back sharply since then as the global economy has suffered.

Eat well, be well

A healthy balanced diet contains a variety of types of food, including lots of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods such as wholemeal bread and wholegrain cereals; some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils; and some milk and dairy foods.
These practical tips can help you make healthier choices.

1. Base your meals on starchy foods
Starchy foods such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta and potatoes are a really important part of a healthy diet.
They are a good source of energy and contain fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins.

2. Eat lots of fruit and veg
Try to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day.

3. Eat more fish
Most of us should be eating more fish - including a portion of oily fish each week. It's an excellent source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals.

4. Cut down on saturated fat and sugar
Try to cut down on food that is high in saturated fat and have foods that are rich in unsaturated fat instead, such as vegetable oils (including sunflower, rapeseed and olive oil), oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds.
We should all be trying to eat fewer foods containing added sugar, such as sweets, cakes and biscuits, and drinking fewer sugary soft and fizzy drinks.

5. Try to eat less salt - no more than 6g a day
Three-quarters (75%) of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy, such as breakfast cereals, soups, sauces and ready meals.

6. Get active and try to be a healthy weight
Physical activity is a good way of using up extra calories, and helps control our weight. Try to get active every day and build up the amount you do.

7. Drink plenty of water
We should be drinking about 6 to 8 glasses (1.2 litres) of water, or other fluids, every day to stop us getting dehydrated.

8. Don't skip breakfast
Breakfast can help give us the energy we need to face the day, as well as some of the vitamins and minerals we need for good health.

BASKETBALLBasketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet (3 m) high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.
Points are scored by shooting the ball through the basket above; the team with more points at the end of the game wins. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it (dribbling) or passing it between teammates. Disruptive physical contact (foul) is not permitted and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled (violations).
Through time, basketball has developed to involve common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players' positions, and offensive and defensive structures. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center or one of two forward positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed, play the guard positions. While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. In some countries, basketball is also a popular spectator sport.
While competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport, played on a basketball court, less regulated variations have become exceedingly popular as an outdoor sport among both inner city and rural groups.

In this July 20, 2007 file photo, the new Acropolis museum, seen, background centre, and the Parthenon Temple, foreground, on the top of the Acropolis ancient hill in Athens. Greek officials say in Athens, on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 the new museum showcasing masterpieces from the Acropolis will be inaugurated this summer after long delays. Culture Minister Antonis Samaras said the opening ceremony will be on June 20, 2009. Initially, Greece had planned to open the museum ahead of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The British Museum has repeatedly refused to relinquish the 2,500-year-old sculptures, which formed part of the Parthenon Temple's decoration until Scottish diplomat Lord Elgin removed them to Britain 200 years ago. At the time, Greece was still an unwilling part of the Ottoman Empire.
The British Museum argues that it legally acquired the Marbles, which form an integral part of its collection and are easily accessible to visitors from all over the world.

Pikes Peak

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Hikers who climb to Pikes Peak's summit but don't feel up to walking the 12 miles back down could soon have to pay for their ride.
The Colorado Springs city council is expected to vote Tuesday on a proposal from Pikes Peak Highway officials that would charge up to $500 for each uninjured hiker who calls 911 for a ride down.
The city runs the toll road up the 14,115-foot peak, but the U.S. Forest Service owns the land.
The likelihood of the council's approval was not immediately known. Forest Service spokeswoman Barbara Timock said the agency is not involved in rescue operations and had no opinion on the proposal.
Some 15,000 people a year attempt to climb Pikes Peak, the second-most visited mountain in the world behind Japan's Mount Fuji.
Under the proposal, hikers who call for a ride before highway workers have gone home would pay $100. The fee could go up to $500 when hikers call 911 after hours, and it could increase if the road has to be plowed to fetch the caller.
It wasn't immediately clear how many such hikers call for emergency rides each year, but local rescue groups say they've stopped providing rides and instead refer calls to highway rangers.
In December, an unidentified hiker who arrived at the summit after dark and broke into the Summit House restaurant and gift shop to avoid freezing was charged $500 for a ride down and a window he broke.

Facebook backs down, reverses on user information policy

Under fire from tens of thousands of users, the social networking site Facebook said early Wednesday it is reverting to its old policy on user information -- for now.
The site posted a brief message on users' home pages that said it was returning to its previous "Terms of Use" policy "while we resolve the issues that people have raised." The "Terms of Use" is the legalese tacked on to the bottom of most Web sites that details what the site's owners can do with the information that users provide. The popular site allows users to create personal profiles where they can then connect with one another, upload photos and share links. The site boasts more than 150 million active users. The company deleted a sentence from the old Terms of Use. That sentence said Facebook could not claim any rights to original content that a user uploaded once the user closed his or her account.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg tried to quell the controversy by saying the company's philosophy is that "people own their information and control who they share it with."
Schnitt said the company is in the process of rewording its Terms of Use in "simple language that defines Facebook's rights much more specifically."

Peugeot Citroen Slovakia will lay off 190 workers

The biggest investor in the Trnava region, the automotive plant Peugeot Citroen Slovakia(PSA), will give layoff notices to 190 employees between March and December 2009 due to the shrinking sales of cars in the European market.
An additional reason for the layoffs is completion of the start up phase for production of a new model
Employees to get the layoff notes are people from the project team that worked on the production launch of the new Citroen C3. Because PSA is not planning to reduce their automobile output, these layoffs will not affect production workers.
The terminated workers will receive four or five months’ severance pay, depending on their years of service.
The factory will run in two full-time shifts this year, with about 3,000 employees producing a daily output of 850 vehicles. Despite the crisis affecting the entire automotive sector, the company is launching production of its new Citroen C3 Picasso model in its Trnava factory.
PSA is the first automotive plant in Slovakia to announce a mass layoff of employees.

Britain's tourism industry is failing

The number of visits to the UK was down 12.5 per cent to 7.45 million in the last three months of last year compared to the same period in 2007, according to the Office for National Statistics. The total amount spent by overseas visitors also fell – down 1 per cent year-on-year to £4 billion for the last quarter – despite the extra spending power of holidaymakers from the eurozone and United States.
Ten euros now buys nearly £9, up from £7 last year, while ten US dollars are now worth £7 from a low of less than £5.Howard Archer, chief UK economist with IHS Global Insight, said that the figures showed that the impact of the global recession was outweighing the positive effect of the falling value of sterling, in terms of attracting tourists. But he added: "It is interesting to note that the number of visitors to the UK fell by more than the amount of their spending, indicating that those people who did visit the UK actually spent more as their money went further due to the strength of their currencies against the pound."
The ONS figures also showed that the number of foreign trips made by Britons fell 6.5 per cent in the three months December against the same period last year.
