The oldest occupied monastery in the world

The monastery of St. Catherine is the oldest occupied monastery in the world. Its roots goes back until the fourth century after Christ and it is named after a very beautiful woman. The speech is about Catherine, daughter of King Kost.



The entrance to the monastery subjects to strict rules. You can not visit it in shorts or mini-skirt. Is prohibited to have discovered shoulders. If you have not appropriate dress you can not go to the monastery.

Tourists visit the St. Catherine´s Church too. There are beautiful mosaics from the sixth century in the church, which built Byzantine artists. In the church are remnants of the St. Catherine. In the monastery live monkhood for centuries and so there are their mass remnants. To a unique belongs rare historical library. There are imposed valuable religious manuscripts, which monkhood study and rewrite. Age of some manuscripts goes back to the fourth century.

The monastery of St. Catherine you can visit in the optional tender of travel agencies during you stay at the Red Sea. In the area of the monastery is a tiny hotel. It is operated by monkhood. You can sleep and eat in center, which is remote from the monastery about two kilometres.
